Elli Petersen-Pik
2021 School Board candidate

Elli Petersen-Pik

I am very keen to join our Board to assist in the good governance of the school and ensure that the school's priorities align with parents' current expectations. My two kids have recently started their Kindy year and we are proud to join the school community, which we have heard positive things about from many parents.

I am currently a senior public servant, working for a State Government Department. I have a Bachelor of Laws and a Masters of Environment. For more than 13 years, I have been dealing with legal, legislative and policy issues. My experience and knowledge of the development and review of policies and processes is likely to be useful on our school Board.

Being a City of Bayswater Councillor (representing Maylands), I am also very familiar with our suburb, the work of our local government and some of the needs of parents, many of whom I know. The Bayswater Council essentially works as a board, so I have significant experience of working with other members in a similar setting to achieve joint goals. During the last three and a half years, I have gained knowledge of budgetary processes, and have participated in setting directions and evaluating them, which would assist me in a role as a Board member.

As a Councillor, I have already contributed to the school's future by initiating the development of a new Safe Routes to School plan (through a motion supported by the Bayswater Council last year) and proposed that Maylands Peninsula Primary School, as the biggest public primary school in the City, be the first school to be looked at. I would like to see the paths, crossings and other infrastructure around the school improved, to allow more kids and parents to walk and cycle safely to school, which will help reduce the parking pressure during drop offs/pick-ups.

As someone who came to Australia as a migrant, I also understand the challenges of many families in the school and would like to support the great diversity that we have here.

I have a strong interest in the success of the school: my kids will spend the next 8 years here. I believe that I have a lot to contribute to the Board and am hoping to have the opportunity to support our Principal, work with our P&C, and engage with fellow parents about what things the school is doing well and what can be improved.
