Megan Parker

I am passionate about the power of education to manifest social change; and have been fortunate to participate in a variety of roles at educational institutions over the past 20 years.

I began my professional life as an Education Assistant in the specialist fashion program at Kent St Senior High School.  In this role, I gained an understanding of the time and budgetary pressures faced by teachers and also worked closely with students who were challenged by the class requirements to help them achieve their goals.

For the past 11 years I have been employed as a Wardrobe Assistant at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts on the Mount Lawley campus of Edith Cowan University, where I mentor Design and Costume students realising costumes for theatre, dance and opera.

After becoming a parent, I benefited from access to onsite care for my child.  I served on the Committee of the not for profit childcare centre on ECU's Mount Lawley campus for a total of three years, fulfilling the role of Chairperson for two years.  In this role, I learned about governance, strategic planning and community engagement.  I was also privileged to work closely with academics from ECU's Faculty of Education, cementing my understanding of the crucial role early childhood education and care plays in providing social supports for parents and families, and in scaffolding developmental needs and potentials of children.

If elected, I would bring to this position the creative thinking; problem solving and communication skills developed in these roles, and in my work as a freelance costumier.

I have lived in Maylands and Bayswater since 2001, and have built many relationships as a friend, neighbour, parent and a strong supporter of small businesses in the area.

I hold a Bachelor of Performing Arts (Costume) and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

I have completed training in recognising workplace discrimination and harassment with the Equal Opportunity Commission.  I have also undertaken professional development in LBGTQI+ Allyship; Disability Inclusion and Support; Cross Cultural Awareness; and Addressing Unconscious Bias.

I am dedicated to paying attention to the diverse and changing needs of people from non-dominant groups.
