Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS)
The Department of Education's Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) provides specialist music tuition across a range of instruments to over 400 primary and secondary schools throughout Western Australia. They provide consultancy, instrumental instruction and ensemble direction, staffing allocation and management, an instrumental loan process, maintenance and repair service, a resource centre and varied enrichment activities for students.
Clarinet, Flute, Brass and Guitar
At Maylands Peninsula Primary School, students in Years 5 and 6 are offered the opportunity to play clarinet, flute, brass or guitar based on a musical aptitude test undertaken in Year 4, together with enthusiasm and attitude towards music as demonstrated in music classes. Other factors considered in the selection process are the student's general attitude, their willingness to practice regularly and attend lessons. Free weekly lessons are conducted during school hours by specialist instrument teachers from IMSS. Students are then offered opportunities to perform at a variety of functions, such as assemblies and award presentations.
