School sustainability programs

Maylands Peninsula Primary School places significant importance on sustainable processes and practices within our school and the local community.

Our aim is to raise our students' awareness of environmental issues and empower them to make a difference as good global citizens.  As such, the school has implemented several initiatives and programs to make a collective impact.

Sustainability Coordinator

The school is supported in its endeavours to 'do our bit' for the environment through the creation of the role of P&C Sustainability Coordinator. The Sustainability Coordinator liaises with various members of staff responsible for each of the sustainability initiatives undertaken by the school.

Mobile School Recycling Station

In addition to our general plastic and paper recycling program, the school has created a mobile recycling station which allows the school community to recycle a variety of common household items which would usually end up in landfill.   Our recycling station collects plastic bread tags, pens, textas, markers, plastic lids, batteries, dishwashing products, air-care products, and oral care products.

Water Wise School

Maylands Peninsula Primary School is an accredited Water Wise School. As such, we provide teaching and learning experiences to educate our students about water conservation and sustainability.

Water Tanks

Three large capacity water tanks store water harvested off one of our teaching blocks. The harvested water is plumbed into our toilet cisterns to reduce our reliance on scheme water.

Solar Panels

The school has a large number of solar panels installed throughout the school to reduce our reliance on grid power.

Your Move program

Our Active Travel Days are held every odd week Friday of the school year. On this day, we encourage as many families as possible to walk, ride, scoot or skate to school to reduce traffic around our school to make it safer for students. There are also the added benefits that come with the exercise, as well as less pollution coming from motor vehicles.
