Hat Wearing Policy
At the school board meeting on Monday 21 May 2012, the board reviewed the school's "No hat, no play" policy in light of recent studies conducted by the Cancer Council and information presented in a risk assessment. The sun's ultraviolet radiation (UV) is both the major cause of skin cancer and the best source of vitamin D. Due to the need for some sun exposure (2-3 - hours per week) in Winter to maintain adequate vitamin D levels, it was decided that the wearing of hats during recess and lunch breaks would become optional for students during the Winter months of June, July and August only. Students will still be required to wear a hat during Physical Education and class lessons conducted outside, but do not have to wear them during break times during these months. Of course, students may choose to continue to wear them during the Winter months and the wearing of hats will be enforced at all other times during the year.
